Yesterday, as I dropped @surfer_dude_for_life off at Supertubes for a morning paddle, I had nice conversation with a friendly Hawaiian gentleman. Little did we know, that hours later, Maui would be burning. Having rubbed shoulders with Hawaiians over the last two decades in J-Bay, and with our culture so heavily impacted by Hawaiin surf culture, it shocked me how much news of a disaster like this in Maui impacted me. As South Africans we are not unfamiliar with wildfire and the aftermath. My heart goes out to all affected, as well as to the rescue workers.
