We’ve just completed our first joint eco-cruise with Stampede Cruises out of Algoa Bay, and it was an outstanding success!
Four friends from Dubai joined Paul, Robbie, and Rodger for what turned out to be a truly special day on the water. For many, this kind of experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we feel privileged to have shared it with them.
Stampede works closely with nature conservation in the area — regularly transporting supplies, scientists, and marine animals between the Marine Protected Area islands and the mainland. Robbie, a walking encyclopedia of local knowledge, kept everyone fascinated with interesting facts and stories about the bay’s wildlife and history.
We were fortunate to get in the water in permitted areas under Paul’s supervision. The highlight was being joined by a massive pod of around 700 common dolphins, which we tracked for a while hoping for sardine action. We also enjoyed sightings of bottlenose dolphins, endangered African penguins, native Cape fur seals, and a wonderful variety of bird species. Paul managed to capture some great stills with his camera, and we spotted various invertebrates while snorkeling.
The boat itself made the day even better: plenty of space to get dressed and geared up comfortably, as well as areas to lounge and soak in the scenery. Catering was included — delicious boerie rolls for lunch, a fresh salad, snacks throughout the day, and freshly ground coffee and tea on board.
